TOP 10 TIPS FOR NEW BLOGGERS

Thursday, 21 July 2016

When I first started blogging I wish I knew these things which now are really obvious and things I do without thinking but when you're new to all this you'd have no idea!

1) JOIN BLOGGER CHATS
These helped me find new bloggers and promote my blog massivley when I first started and still do. There is at least one chat every single day of the week at some point in the day and there's a variety of topics too. Becky has a post with a weekly calender of each of the chats here so be sure to have a look there.

2) JOIN FACEBOOK GROUPS
Now I don't post in these a lot anymore but they're still really handy for promoting your own posts and finding new posts. I'm in Blog BFFs, FBL, Fashion, Beauty, Lifestyle Bloggers, UK Beauty Youtubers & Bloggers and BBloggers and FBloggers which are all ones I'd reccomend!

3) TWITTER IS YOUR BESTFRIEND
Twitter is where I'd say I get over 75% of my traffic from, it's the only social media that is still in chronological order (excuse me insta) and you don't have to pay for your posts to be seen (hello facebook) there's the chats that I mentioned at the start plus practically everyone uses twitter so it's easy to promote posts and make friends.

4) YOU DON'T NEED A FANCY PANCY CAMERA
I used my iPhone 5 for my first year and the photos weren't amazing, but they weren't terrible. To me it's all about how you edit them and how you use your natuarl lighting around you. There's some fantastic tips around but my top 2 would be always photograph in natural daylight with the sun in front of you and edit the photos, I used to use PicMonkey but I now use Photoshop on my phone as it's a free app!

5) LOOK FOR LOCAL BLOGGERS
Luckily for me I run the local bloggers network so it's pretty easy to find bloggers, but finding local bloggers is such an amazing thing to do. I've made fantastic friends who are now my real life friends, we meet up for meals and drinks. Being friends with local bloggers is so amazing too because if there's events in your area you can go together, you can also take photos of eachother because let's be real our boyfriends and other friends don't understand how difficult it is.

6) SCHEDULE POSTS
I never used to schedule my posts, I'd just write them then hit publish. To help increase traffic I always write my posts at least one day in advance so I know that when it's scheduled for 6.30am the next day it's going to hit the maximum amount of people compared to publishing it at 10pm.

7) JOIN EVERY SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM
I am on everything, twitter, facebook, instagram, pinterest, google+, youtube, snapchat- pretty much everything. I find I have different people on each one so I know that when I post my content on each one it's going to reach a different audience.

8) PROOFREAD POSTS
I'm still pretty crappy at this but there is honestly nothing worse in my opinion than a beautifully written post with amazing photos with a few mistakes here and there. It's very easy to do, what I usually do is read the post in my head once, then read it out loud to make sure everything makes sense. If it's a particilary long post I'll get someone else to have a quick check too. The small things really are important. (I'm also now very afraid that I'll have made a mistake in this post now that I've mentioned it ooops)

9) DON'T COMPARE YOURSELF
I'll admit that I am the worst for this, I'm forever comparing myself to other bloggers and it's silly really. It's not a competition, when they get one amazing opportunity you may recieve an even better one a few months later. It's also not a competition as to who is doing what, these people are your friends, be supportive of them!

10) BE REALISTIC
You will not be earning big money a month after starting your blog, in fact you may never earn a single penny. If money and free things are what you want straight away withhout putting in hard work, blogging probably isn't for you. If you've started blogging for those reasons and you're willing to put in the work good for you, don't let those people who act like money isn't a reason for starting, we do amazing things and getting paid to do what we love is an awesome bonus!

You won't get thousands of followers straight away either, everything in blogging takes work and time- it's also a very different experience for each person, you may start the exact same day as one person, post the same amount and only have half of what they have. That is fine, just keep doing what you're doing!
